• Why I Double Dunked on Baptism Sunday

    By Rob Tomes

Baptism Sundays are some of my favorite services at GT Church! This year I have had the opportunity and privilege to baptize numerous people that have given their lives over to Christ and are taking this important step of obedience in their walk with Him. One particular baptism reminded me of my own baptism that occurred approximately eighteen years ago. A Bunch of Dunkards Dru George entered the baptismal tank on GT’s stage, he smiled with a nervous smile, and I got him into position to get ready for a “Pastor Rob Power Dunk.” Before I spoke words of prophecy over Dru, he leaned over and said, “I need as much of Jesus as possible.” Dru’s words took me back to my own baptism. My first baptism was when I was seven years old and I remember getting into the …

  • Heroes are Made in a Moment

    By Rob Tomes

I wanted to be just like him and I knew it would only be a matter of time in which I would be able to fly through the sky. The pillow case was flapping behind my neck and half tucked into an extraordinarily bright blue pajama top.  Oh, how the crimson red emblazoned “S’” with the gold background shimmered in the bedroom light! I jumped from my bed producing powerful swoosh sound effects with my lips. I was faster than a speeding bullet! I was more powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound! Up in the sky, look! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Superman! I was him, my hero, the “Man of Steel.” I thought superheroes such as Superman spectacular and believed only they could perform acts of heroism and gallantry. However, …

  • Is This It?

    By Rob Tomes

The Lysol toilet bowl cleaner with the patented angled cap was in my right hand and the over-used blue scrubber that should have been discarded approximately a month ago was in my left hand. The aromatic combination of the scrubbing bubbles and teenage urine hit my nose for the one- hundredth time in the last two hours as I had scrubbed every bathroom in the ten thousand square foot church. As my eyes became transfixed at the vigorously stirred fizzing water I felt falsely raptured in mind because my equilibrium matched the high pressured vortex of the now polished throne. I stumbled toward the sink and splashed the fresh, cool water on my  flushed cheeks and I stared into the reflective mirror and cried out to God, “Is this it?? Is this why you have called me into ministry? Is …

  • Flippin’ Tables

    By Rob Tomes

Questions! When my daughter was younger she was always asking the question, “Why?” Why is the sky blue? Why do we pray before dinner? Why are we going to Oma’s house? Why? Why? Why? She was inquisitive and wanted to know Why things were the way they were. I never minded answering these questions, because it really brought some clarity to the world around her. Recently, I received the following question about our Sacred Grounds café that serves food and drinks at our West Lawn campus. Regarding the cafe’ – Do you charge for the food and drinks served there? If so, how does that comply with Christ at the Temple when he removed the vendors? “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’” – Matthew 21:12-13 So, …

  • Invested Life

    By Rob Tomes

Quiet muttering and softly muted voices floated in the air. Beeping machines with little lights dancing across diagnostic equipment were attached to her human frame. The countenance of exasperated emotion on the faces of the nightshift nurses, the quick knowing glances from the doctors, for them this was not an uncommon scene. For us however, this night was to change our extended family’s life forever. I stood at the end of the bed, my cousin was to my immediate right watching his bride when I noticed an expression of cherished love come across his face which produced a faraway reminiscing stare as if he was reliving parts of their lives together. Before he could finish his raptured thoughts, the ventilator which was partly tasked at keeping the body alive loudly kicked on startling my cousin back into reality. He slowly …

  • Who is the Holy Spirit?

    By Rob Tomes

Wow! 2018 is off and running and we’re already three quarters of the way through January. Here at GT Church we are at the end of our first sermon series of the year, “Who is God.” To say that time flies is an overused understatement that usually drips from the tongues of those of us who tend to be a little older than eighteen. I can hardly believe that earlier this month I celebrated the two-year mark of coming on staff as the associate pastor. I can tell you without ostentatious rhetoric that my family and I truly love the people of GT and are conscious of God’s blessings in allowing us to serve you in this capacity. A few people know that in my younger years and through adolescence I grew up in the Anabaptist denomination of the Church …
